October OUAS GD

The Flying Unicorn Creative Team are Guest Designers at Once Upon A … Sketch! this month. It is always such a pleasure to play along with Nadia's sketches, and this month is no exception. Along with the sketch, OUAS requires journaling inspired by their theme of the month; this is always the real challenge for me! This seems ludicrous, because my other favourite pastime is writing (and I'm extremely wordy!), but like so many others, I'm not fond of my handwriting, and scrapbooking is also very visual for me.

This month's theme is "The Women In Our Lives…" - another personal challenge for me, as I have hundreds of boy pictures laid by to scrap, but not a lot of girl pictures. I started with a piece of background paper I loved from the Flying Unicorn's October Your Passion, Your Art kit and then picked a photo of my niece that complemented the industrial look I was aiming for.

And then I set to work with the sketch as inspiration.

The 4x8 image sheets from FabScraps were perfect for fussy cutting and layering for a weathered, industrial look. I covered everything the background paper with a thin coat of clear gesso, and used white gesso over the layered pieces for a whitewashed effect. Both colours of gesso allow me to manipulate the paint on the background with ease. The rustiness was added with Ombre Izink.

Although I kept the piece quite neutral, I did add some pops of pink using Shimmerz paint and mist from the kit.

The flowers are from the kit and add-ons, as are the Prima metal elements.

The Heidi Swapp transparencies were perfect for adding a simple but striking title.

Thank you for stopping by today! Be sure to pop by OUAS and play along - Flying Unicorn is a permanent sponsor, and there are many wonderful prizes up for grabs. We'd also love to see anything you create over on the Flying Unicorn Forums.
