Flying Unicorn June Off-The-Page Project

What makes Flying Unicorn's kit of the month unique is the inclusion of an Off-The-Page project with every main kit. This month's OTP was something else - a small tin garden bench. I knew what I wanted to do with it from the get-go, but I was worried that the end result might not live up to my expectations. Luckily, everything worked out according to plan. Gotta love when that happens!

Here is my weathered garden bench:

I began by priming the frame of the bench with black paint, and painted the "wooden" slats with a wood-coloured glaze. Once everything was dry, I added rusting powder to areas of the frame to age it. At the finishing stages I added some 13 Arts Gesso to the frame and flowers (after all, every birdie poops).

Do you save the florist's wire you cut from your flowers? I do, and it was perfect as trailing vines for this project.

The resin birds were coloured using Prima Color Bloom sprays, which work perfectly on resin. I applied 3 different colours, starting with the lightest, and heat set each layer before adding the next. I then added a little shading with chalk edgers.

My little birdies needed some bird seed, and gold microbeads fit the bill.

The little nest is made from jute twine to give this little birdie somewhere to roost.

If you didn't have a chance to preorder your kit, be sure to pick one up before they're all gone - it's another stunner!

CSI 125 Guest Detective

The Flying Unicorn Creative Team have been Guest Detectives at CSI: Color, Stories, Inspiration for the month of May, and today the fifth and last Case File opens. Thank you Debbi for having us once again; I have really enjoyed solving this month's Case Files!

The colours in this week's Case File were perfect boy colours, so what did I choose to scrap? A photo of my dog! It was just one of those things - when I was searching for a photo through my files, this one, with all its green grass, popped out at me.

Here is Case File #125, currently open for investigation.

I started with a neutral background so I could layer on the media. 7 Dots Studio's Cold Country papers were perfect, and they even included the shade of grey and pale blue on the colour palette.

Some Silks in Pretty Peridot through a Quatrefoil mask took care of one of the colours and some of the evidence. I splattered on some bright teal mist, but it wasn't making enough of an impact, so I added some teal stencilling.

For the pale yellow green I dribbled on some mist, and I added a little more pale blue with chalk ink.

Evidence

- Quatrefoil pattern
- Buttons
- Clocks

Testimony

- Button on the journalling spot

I hope you'll check out this week's Case File and try your hand at solving the case!

Thanks for stopping by today - I always appreciate your visits.

Supplies

- 7 Dots Studio Cold Country papers:
- Silks: Pretty Peridot
- Prima Stencil: 12x12 Quatrefoil, 6x6 Checker
- Shimmerz Dazzlerz: Gummy Bear Blue
- Prima Chalk Edger: Turquoise Stone
- Faber-Castell Pitt Pen: Black/Small

Once Upon a Time Art Journal Page - the Evil Queen

It's my turn on the Flying Unicorn Today post to share a "just because" project I've been working on, and today's project is another page from my Once Upon a Time art journal, featuring the Evil Queen (aka Snow White's evil stepmother). Stealer of hearts (literally), purveyor of poisoned apples, this lady is baaaaad, and she has flair!

The combination of Prima's Julie Nutting Tasha stamp and Stationer's Desk papers conveyed the drama of the character beautifully. This time I stayed pretty true to the stamp, though I did swap out her low ponytail for Mindy's bouffant.
I absolutely love the drama of this dress. It is great for mixing patterns and layering. I wanted to showcase the gorgeous red and grey of the Stationer's Desk papers while keeping the Evil Queen's dress dark and dangerous. Doesn't she look like someone who might slip you a poisoned apple?

When making tags or art journal pages (whether you're layering paper or layering media) it's all in the details.

The Evil Queen keeps the hearts she's stolen in boxes; a couple of pieces of heat embossed chipboard were perfect, and I love that the heart has an almost luminous feel.

I didn't have any black alphas of the right size, so I coloured these  using black chalk ink - easy peasy.

It can be difficult to show details on hair when using black ink on black paper; I added Pearl Pen to add some definition to both her hair and the background, and gave her a headdress of lace. The chipboard piece was painted with Dazzlerz, which added dimension and shine.

I love the chunky crystals from Prima's releases this year, and added one from the Cartographer collection to the centre of the compass.

If, like me, you happen to have a thing for paper dolls, don't forget, there's still plenty of time left to play along in Jen's Parade of the Dolls Challenge, which runs through the end of the month. Stamped dolls, printed dolls, hand-drawn dolls - all dolls are welcome! In the meantime, I just had a new doll stamp delivered and I need a fix!

Prima Divine Canvas Alphas
