My October "Monster Mash" Challenge at Flying Unicorn

I can't believe that October is here already!  September has flown by.  While we're still enjoying warmer (and drier) than average weather in Vancouver, the arrival of October invariably means the arrival of the Halloween season.

For my challenge this month at Flying Unicorn I have prepared a recipe with a decidedly Halloween feel, though entries do not have to be Halloween themed.

Recipe for "Monster Mash"

- Foil
- Gauze
- Eyelets
- A Green Medium
- Ribbon or lace

Here is my inspiration layout:

I used some very, very old Basic Grey and Bo Bunny papers (so old they are still single-sided!) from my stash.  The photo is of my niece at Halloween a couple of years ago - it was the first time she had gone trick-or-treating.  My three year old can't figure out the word "vampire" so he says that she was a "sand pirate" - too cute!

Here are a couple of close-ups:

The gorgeous white blooms are from Manor House Creations, available from the Flying Unicorn Store.  The gate is Petaloo Color-Me-Crazy from the September kit; I've painted it with black acrylic and cut it in half so it frames my title.

To make the foil letters, I adhered foil tape from the hardware store to scrap strips of cardstock, ran them through the BigShot with the Tim Holtz Vintage Market letter die and then ran them through again in the Riveted Metal Texture Fade.  I then painted them with black acrylic and once that was dry rubbed on the green Inka-Gold.

For the background I used my Crafter's Workshop brick mask as a stencil, then painted in the individual bricks with molding paste for lots of texture.  I finished them off with Mowed Lawn Distress ink from the Flying Unicorn Store to give the appearance of slimy bricks in a crypt.

I also dripped green alcohol ink down the page to add to the effect of a slimy, dank place.

This challenge is open to anyone who is a member of the Flying Unicorn community - it's free to join.  And as always, Alda is providing a gorgeous RAK to the winner of each challenge.  Here's the fantastic, and appropriately spooky, prize you could win just for playing along:

2. Cards, layouts or off-the-page projects welcome; no digital

4. Entries do not have to be Halloween themed
5. Entries must include all of the recipe items

3. Each individual can only win one challenge at the Flying Unicorn per month - enter as many challenges as you'd like to increase your chances of winning; international entries are welcome.

5. Projects must be uploaded to the challenge thread and the Gallery

Flying Unicorn & Sketchabilities #76

Flying Unicorn is sponsoring Sketchabilities and Cardabilities this month, and the Flying Unicorn CT has been invited to play along.

Here is my interpretation of Sketch #76.

One day this summer I put my three boys in childminding at our family club while I went to the gym.  Colby was crying and the wonderful childcare attendants were unable to settle him down.  At their wits' end, they finally asked Elliot, who was nearly 6, what he thought might be wrong.  He said, "I think he misses our dog.  They're best friends." LOL!  So when I saw this metal "best friends" trinket in my kit I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

Everything on this layout is from the September Flying Unicorn Kit of the Month "Vintage Harmony" with the exception of the bling flourish and the shabby metal birdhouse.

Here are some closeups.  I lifted the idea to trim the banner portion off the pink ribbon in the Main Kit from my fellow DT member Denise - thanks sweetie!

Mixed Media Smackdown Challenge *** Flying Unicorn ***

This month at the Flying Unicorn we have been featuring a number of Back To School tutorials teaching new techniques and different ways to use your scrappy supplies.  When I saw Monica's Mixed Media Smackdown challenge I couldn't wait to play along.  Unfortunately it took until the end of the month for me to find time to get it done (I painted the watercolor paper with gesso about 10 days ago, set it aside to dry and forgot about it!), but here is my layout for inspiration.

This is a layout of my second son, Brennan, on the swing in the backyard when he was a baby.  He was sure a darling, but this was his trademark pouty moue.

I started off by coating watercolor paper with gesso.  Once it was dry (very, very dry LOL) I applied Distress Ink in Festive Berries, Mowed Lawn and Squeezed Lemonade, all available from the Flying Unicorn Store and smeared it while it was still wet with a baby wipe to give it some added dimension.  The stamping around the edges is a set of Dylusions stamps colored with a white poster pen.  I then applied molding paste through a Donna Downey Prima mask, also available from the store and set the whole thing aside to dry while I fussy cut my stamped "Adore" title and coated it with Rock Candy Distress Stickles.  And voila!

The Color Room #129 and Flying Unicorn KOM

The Flying Unicorn is sponsoring the Color Room for September, and all this month our CT is playing along.  This week's palette features three beautiful shades of green set against crisp white, and is perfectly complemented by the September Kit of the Month from Flying Unicorn, Vintage Harmony.

Here is what I created:

Hard to believe that this little munchkin is 6 already!  I knew as soon as I saw this sentiment printed on the Kaisercraft Miss Match papers that it was one I wanted to use - who doesn't wish this for their children?

7 Gypsies Trousseau *** Flying Unicorn Sale ***

7 Gypsies is currently on sale for 20% off in the Flying Unicorn store through September 30th. I had a chance to work with the beautiful papers from the Trousseau collection.

My fellow CT member Kelly had done a gorgeous layout with the August kit where she had inked the edges of torn strips of patterned paper with black ink to make her background, and I took that as my starting point.  I didn't want to use any of the vintage photo images on the papers because they didn't fit with my modern photo, but I was able to cut and tear around them.  Although it may not look like it at first glance, the papers have lots of opportunities for fussy cutting, and I cut out the details I wanted, such as the words and the photo mat with banners, before I tore my background strips.  I also have a couple lovely fussy cut flower clusters in reserve for another layout.



I placed some rectangles and some strips of paper, patterned masking tape and canvas writer's tape where I would be placing my photo and my accent clusters, then applied Crystal Gel through a brick wall mask to add some more dimension to my background. After adding my embellishments I misted everything using Tattered Angels Abominable Snowman Glimmer Mist and Chalkboard Cherry Cola, Perfect Pearls in Blue Smoke and Dylusions Black Marble.  I went a bit too heavy with the black mist, so I painted over the flowers in my main cluster with Silks paint in Jasmine which I lightened with Distress Stain in Picket Fence.  Disaster averted!
