My Creative Scrapbook August Limited Edition Kit

I am honoured to have been asked to be a Guest Designer for My Creative Scrapbook with their gorgeous Limited Edition kits. This month’s kit features the beautiful papers from Blue Fern Studios’ Attic Charm collection (and if you’ve followed my blog for awhile, you know I have a soft spot for Blue Fern) and Graphic 45’s Time To Flourish collection, along with gorgeous flowers from Prima and Blue Fern Studios, and chipboard from Blue Fern, Maggie Holmes and Heidi Swapp.

For my first layout, I wanted to achieve a fun theme to go with the picture of two of my boys jumping on the beach. Motivated by the chipboard pinwheels, I set out to create pinwheels of my own with some G45 paper (the larger of the two measures 2x2” and the smaller 1.5x1.5”) to use as accents.

I started with some background work. First, I coated the entire page in clear gesso to allow myself more control with the media I would apply later on. I scraped heavy white gesso in certain spots using a palette knife. Once that was dry, I added stencilling with white crackle paste, which I allowed to dry before brushing over some of the gold spray from the kit using a wet paintbrush to dilute it. I also brushed the gold spray around the edges, adding a darker gold colour from my stash closer to the edge.

To bring in the blue from the picture, I painted through a stencil using Gelatos, then added paper strips, a decorative straw, drywall tape, trim from the kit (cut in half for a ragged edge) and stamping to complete the background.

One of the first things I did when I received the kit was to cut apart the G45 June Cut Apart and BFS Calling Cards papers so that I would have lots of little bits for layering (I edged these with different colours of Gelatos for this layout to give them definition). I fussy cut the blue flowers and roses from the G45 papers, and layered those in along with some cheesecloth and the pinwheels I'd made earlier.

The rolled roses from Prima included in this kit are great for tucking into clusters, as they do equally well on their sides.

The Maggie Holmes Bloom chipboard is great for layering - I used it for the centres of all of my pinwheels and to tuck in to my clusters.

If you aren't already a My Creative Scrapbooker subscriber, head on over to the website to check out not only this month's kits, but also past kits - you won't be disappointed!
